One of the nicest launches around used to be Strawberry Banks. We enjoyed the large grassy rigging area, close parking, and shallow sandy waters for many years before a series of events completely ended sailing here.

TThe first problem was lack of insurance. We managed to get around that by having everyone sign a waiver of liability before launching there. This lasted for about a year.

After a series of manage, ent turnovers there, they ended up with a replacement who decided that since we offered no financial incentive to the business we could no longer launch there at all.

The final nail in the coffin came when the business was bought out by Hampton University. What started out to look like a turn for the better turned out to be the end of our hopes of having this nice property to launch from and as a wonderful place to hold regattas. The university staff decided "not to participate" in out proposal to trade launch priveledges for regular groundskeeping like we had done in the past. Strawberry Banks is now just a memory.

Here, Derek Elkins heads back to the sandy Beaches of Strawberry Banks back in the good ol' days.
