Although obscured by some high altitude clouds and a few contrails, this photo shows the reef, as it is called, in the Pamlico Sound.

The image below it has been enhanced to bring out detail of the reef. This is a sand bar that runs within two or three miles off shore behind Windsurfing Hatteras and more like five miles from the Canadian Hole. On a north, northwest, and southwest winds there can be nice breaking waves where the shallows of the reef make their presence known because of the long fetch the builds the swell and causes them to break at the shallower reef.

Chris Zeitvogel and I once made a run to the reef from the Hole. I'd suggest not doing it from here because by the time you get there you will be pretty worked and probably won't feel like playing in the waves.
